Finding the Love of Your Life

Why Loving Yourself First Works

Gayla Wick - Wednesday, January 25, 2012

The focus of my work for the past several years has been on helping women, so I was both surprised and delighted to be asked to be a featured guest on a radio show primarily geared toward men. To prepare for this interview, I’ve been thinking more about gender differences regarding love and intimacy. While I believe both men and women desire true intimacy with another, the ways we go about finding it and living it aren’t the same. My experience and research has shown me that (in love) ultimately men want to be appreciated and women want to be adored – that is to be regarded with the utmost esteem, fervent love and honor.

Skipping to the aspect of physical intimacy, many believe men get to love or demonstrate their love through sex and women deeply experience the joy of sex through love. Understanding this gender difference helps couples more smoothly navigate their life’s journey together. Sharing deep intimacy physically, emotionally, intellectually and spiritually is a true mountaintop experience not to be missed in this lifetime.  We all can have it, if we’re willing to be open, vulnerable and truly authentic in our own lives as well as in our relationships.

It’s not possible to give away what we don’t have.  This is a primary reason, I advocate falling in love with ourselves first.  Looking for another person to complete us is telling the Universe that we’re not enough.  Knowing your own worth, deeply loving and caring for your own heart, creates the capacity to deeply and completely love another. Having an abundance mentality rather than a sense of lack is the true foundation of a loving long term love relationship. Men and women may share the mutual goal of a deeply satisfying love relationship even though the approach may be quite different.

I’ll be talking a lot more about this interesting topic in my upcoming interview with radio host, Doug Gertner, PhD.  He may have some challenging questions and/or a different perspective so I’m really looking forward to having a beneficial and lively discussion. For those that tune in or listen to the recording that day, I’ll have a special offer for you.  I know we’ll have some fabulous advice for men and women just in time for Valentine’s Day.

So mark your calendar and plan to join us for The Grateful Dad Radio Hour:  A Conversation about Men….at Home, at Work, & at Play with Host: Doug Gertner, Ph.D., The Grateful Dad.®
